Mission and objectives
UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide.
Context
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women work in Ukraine focuses on supporting the government and civil society in advancing gender equality and implementation of the national and international commitments on gender equality and women’s human rights. UN Women Ukraine implements interventions towards the realization of following strategic goals: elimination of violence against women and girls; implementation of women, peace and security agenda and gender responsive governance. UN Women works closely with the UN Country Team in integration of women’s rights and gender equality in all spheres of UN work. Since the beginning of the Russian full scale military invasion, Ukraine is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most complex emergencies. The communications and advocacy activities will raise awareness about existing problems in achieving gender equality, celebrate women’s leadership and inclusion, feature real-life stories from women and men, girls and boys that promote equality by means of compelling content, impactful media collaborations, influencer engagement, and digital communication tools, alongside the evidence generated through various knowledge products. Where possible, efforts will also be aligned with government communications activities to leverage momentum and opportunities for reaching wider audiences.
Task description
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Communications and Advocacy Analyst, and the Communications Team or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Communications Associate will:
• Draft communication materials: press releases, talking points, human impact stories jointly with project specialists, other communication products as required;
• Development, coordination and execution of the communications campaigns and events, special media projects;
• Content development (print, video) and design for different channels, coordination of the content distribution on UN Women platforms and partner/media platforms; • Develop and manage the UN Women Ukraine CO website, provide oversight and quality assurance into its contents based on corporate requirements;
• Manage the CO social media accounts in line with corporate social media policy;
• Produce graphic images and texts for social media and CO website in Ukrainian and English;
• Produce regular analytics of the UN Women Ukraine social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram);
• Under supervision of the communications team, provide timely submission of multimedia products and knowledge products to the regional communications channels;
• Provide support to the communications team to develop, edit and translate the narratives for the Ukraine and Regional Office websites into English and Ukrainian language, including but not limited to stories, news releases, announcements, articles, subtitles to videos, and more;
• Provide support to the communications team on operational and administrative tasks;
• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Content Creation: Draft press releases, talking points, human-interest stories, and other communication products in coordination with project teams.
- Campaign and Event Management: Coordinate communications campaigns, media projects, and public events promoting gender equality.
- Multimedia Production: Develop and manage content (print, video, graphic) for UN Women platforms and partners; ensure timely submission to regional channels.
- Digital Platforms Management: Maintain the UN Women Ukraine website and social media accounts in line with corporate standards.
- Analytics and Reporting: Produce regular analytics of social media engagement with insights and recommendations.
- Language Support: Translate, edit, and write content in Ukrainian and English for various platforms including websites, news releases, and videos.
- Technical and Admin Support: Provide operational support to the communications team on logistics, admin, and internal coordination.
- Promote Volunteerism: Contribute to UNV activities, share knowledge, support the Buddy Programme, and promote online and community volunteering.
Qualification Requirements
- Education: Master’s degree or equivalent in Communications, PR, Marketing, Social Media Management, Digital Production, Journalism.
- Languages: Fluent in English and Ukrainian (Required).
- Experience:
- At least 3 years in a communications role at national or international level.
- Experience in digital communications, web and social media management, copywriting, and graphic design.
- Proven ability in coordinating multimedia production (photo, video, digital).
- Strong writing and editing skills in both English and Ukrainian.
- Familiarity with Drupal, HTML, Readymag is an asset.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere) and Canva.
- Ability to work creatively under tight deadlines.
- Experience working in multicultural, inclusive teams.

National UN Volunteer Expert Entitlements
- Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA): USD 1,587/month (in UAH), includes hardship differential.
- Entry Lump Sum: USD 400 (one-time).
- Medical and Life Insurance:
- UNV medical insurance (for volunteer and eligible dependents).
- Life insurance coverage during the assignment.
- Leave Entitlements:
- Annual Leave: 2.5 days/month.
- Learning Leave: Up to 10 days/year.
- Sick Leave: 30 days certified + 7 days uncertified/year.
- Assignment Duration: Full-time, with possibility of extension based on performance and funding.
